The Church of São Sebastião is integrated into the urban environment of São Brás de Alportel, in the area known as Calçada. Its current position is within the streets that make up the town's fabric, a few meters from where it originally stood. It is a point accessible on foot, inviting a peaceful break in the center of the locality.
The history of the Church of São Sebastião began in the 17th century, with the construction of the original temple in 1673. This first building was erected by order of Bishop D. Francisco Barreto II and was located in an area of great importance to the settlement, in the current Largo de São Sebastião, which then represented one of the main arteries and a social and economic center.
However, the urban reorganization of the village, carried out at the end of the 19th century, more precisely in 1893, led to the demolition of the primitive chapel. The church was, however, rebuilt a few meters west of its original location, thus maintaining its presence and religious function in the community of São Brás de Alportel.
The building observable today features a rectangular nave and chancel plan, giving it a balanced and functional volume. Its main facade is one of its most striking elements, crowned by a scrolled pediment, which gives it a particular profile in the local architectural landscape. This element is flanked by two bell turrets, which rise on each side of the facade.
At ground level, the church's main entrance is defined by a straight lintel portal, with a simplicity of lines that harmonizes with the overall structure. Above this portal, a circular oculus allows natural light into the interior, contributing to the atmosphere of the space. These details reflect the aesthetics of the period in which the temple was rebuilt.
