Located in the village of Luz, in the municipality of Lagos, Algarve, near the castle, Roman ruins and the beach.
The church was built in an area already inhabited since Roman times, with an original hermitage that, according to tradition, would have been erected to house the image of Nossa Senhora da Luz, rescued from the Moors.
The church combines Late Gothic, Manueline and Baroque styles. Inside, the gilded altarpiece stands out, with images of Nossa Senhora da Luz, Saint Romão and Saint Stephen.
The chancel is the oldest part of the church, with a star vault and three corbels ornamented with medallions. This area has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1944.
Inside, there is a lantern tower dated 1521, with inscriptions in Gothic letters of unknown meaning, and a baptismal font unique in the Algarve, decorated with seven shields representing the seven sacraments.
After the 1755 earthquake, the church suffered damage and was restored in 1874. More recently, between 2012 and 2023, archaeological excavations were carried out and a new restoration intervention is planned, including the exterior painting and the surrounding wall, with support from the Lagos City Council.
During archaeological excavations in the area, traces of Roman occupation were found, including ceramics and amphorae, as well as fragments from other periods.
The church continues to be one of the main points of religious and historical interest in the region, with its rich history and architecture attracting local visitors and tourists.
