Location

The Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo is located in the peaceful urbanization of Quinta dos Reis, situated in the locality of Alcantarilha, within the municipality of Silves. This area of the Algarve, known for its pleasant and relaxed atmosphere, offers a serene setting for the religious building. Its prominent position in a square gives it natural visibility and an inviting atmosphere for a tranquil visit.

Past and Foundation

The current building of the Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo dates back to the 18th century, with its construction taking place between the years 1755 and 1766. However, its presence on this site has deeper roots, standing on the ground where a hermitage once existed. This hermitage, dedicated to Saint Catherine, was founded in the first half of the 16th century, establishing a continuity of worship and history at this point in Alcantarilha. The church's construction even utilized elements from earlier buildings, integrating them into its structure.

Architecture and Interior

The Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo features a religious architecture that combines influences from the 17th and 18th centuries, with elements ranging from Baroque to Rococo and Neoclassical. Its longitudinal plan develops into a main nave, which is wider, and a chancel, slightly narrower. On the left side, the sacristy and the old dependencies of the Venerable Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel are adjoined, with a square-plan bell tower rising at the center of this complex.

The main facade, facing north, is defined by ashlar pilasters and stands out with a straight lintel portal, topped by a reverse-curved pediment displaying the coat of arms of the Carmelite Order. The interior of the church is marked by a single nave, with a high wooden choir. The side walls of the nave feature perfect arches, each housing a chapel with an altar and altarpiece in gilded and polychrome carving. The chancel is accessed by a triumphal arch with Ionic capitals, and its barrel-vaulted ceiling is adorned with mural paintings. The high altar, with its altarpiece, Eucharistic throne, and chamber, also displays rich gilded and polychrome carving, complementing the aesthetic of the pulpit, which features a harmonious carved valance.
