Burgau Fort is located near the village of Burgau, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, in the Algarve region of Portugal. It can be accessed via Rua da Fortaleza.
The fort is a military property located on an elevated point, at an altitude of 81 meters, near the sea. Its structure has a quadrangular plan, which has remained unchanged over the years.
Built in stone and masonry, Burgau Fort features a battery with two iron cannons facing the ocean. There is a building to the north, used as prison accommodation, with a barrel vault. The terrace on top stands out, incorporating traditional elements of the Algarve.
It is believed that the first defensive structure on the site was a watchtower erected during the reign of King Manuel I. The fort was built in the 17th century, during the reign of King John IV, as part of the military construction program after the Restoration War. Its function was to protect the fishing village of Burgau.
The fort was damaged by the 1755 earthquake, but soon underwent reconstruction work. In 1821, it was already in a state of ruin, and during the Portuguese Civil War, it was equipped with two artillery pieces for coastal defense. It was closed in 1834, after the conflict, and, over the years, it went through periods of abandonment and deterioration.
Burgau Fort was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1977. Its architecture and history represent an important testimony to the military presence in the Algarve region and the defensive structures of the past.
Currently, the fort is in an advanced state of degradation and is not open to the public. However, its presence and historical value can be appreciated on a walk around the vicinity, exploring the beauty of the village of Burgau and its surroundings.
