The Ponta da Bandeira Fort is located in the city of Lagos, in the Algarve region of Portugal. It was built in the 17th century as part of a system of maritime fortifications to defend the city.
The fort is located at the entrance to the Lagos harbor and played a crucial role in the maritime defense of the city. It protected access to the quays and walls, allowing for crossfire with other fortifications.
The fort has a regular quadrangular plan and is built in masonry. It has an upper terrace accessible by a ramp and is surrounded by a moat. The four cylindrical sentry boxes were added during restoration work in the 20th century.
Inside the fort, a small chapel dedicated to Santa Bárbara stands out, lined with 17th-century tiles. It is an element of special interest for visitors.
The Ponta da Bandeira Fort is considered one of the main and best-preserved 17th-century fortifications in the Algarve. Unlike other defensive structures, it has remained almost unchanged over the years.
The fort was transferred to the Lagos City Council in the 1970s and currently has cultural functions. It houses temporary exhibitions, a museum center on the Portuguese Discoveries, and a restaurant.
The Ponta da Bandeira Fort has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 2002. It is considered a symbol of the city of Lagos.
