The Fortress of Armação de Pêra is located in Armação de Pêra, in the municipality of Silves, in the district of Faro, Portugal.
It has been a Property of Public Interest since 1978.
It is believed that the site was originally an ancient Lusitanian castro or a Roman fort to defend the mouth of the Alcantarilha stream. In 1571, a fort was built to protect against attacks by pirates and privateers. In addition to defense, the fort offered protection to people involved in fishing who moved from the parish of Alcantarilha to this location. Over the centuries, the population began to settle in the region, giving rise to the village of Armação de Pêra, focused on fishing and agriculture, especially the production of dried fruits. Around 1720, the Chapel of Santo António was built inside the fortification, in honor of the patron saint of the fort. The fort suffered significant damage in the 1755 earthquake, but was later rebuilt.
Currently, the Fortress of Armação de Pêra functions as a tourist viewpoint, providing panoramic views of Armação de Pêra beach and the ocean.
