Fiesa, the International Sand Sculpture Festival, was located in an open-air exhibition space in the town of Pêra, within the municipality of Silves. The venue was a dedicated space specifically designed to host this major sand art exhibition, offering an ideal environment for contemplating its monumental creations.
This festival stood out for its unique form of artistic expression, annually utilizing approximately 40 thousand tons of a type of sand particularly suitable for sculpture, found in the Algarve region. Sculptors from various parts of the world gathered to transform this raw material into large-scale works, which often exceeded natural size. Each edition of Fiesa was conceived around a distinct theme, uniting the approximately one hundred pieces exhibited within a 15,000 square meter space. Historical figures, famous faces, imaginary creatures, and representations of nature were recurring elements, executed with remarkable detail and skill.
A visit to Fiesa offered an experience of discovery, as one walked the paths that revealed, at each turn, new and imposing sand sculptures. During the day, the natural luminosity of the Algarve highlighted the grandeur and texture of the works. At nightfall, creative lighting completely transformed the venue, enveloping the sculptures in a magical and dramatic atmosphere, where projected shadows created new perspectives. The open-air nature of this exhibition necessitated constant maintenance of the sculptures and a dependence on climatic conditions for their integrity. At certain times, it was possible to observe artists on site, either creating new pieces from compacted sand or performing repair work on existing sculptures, demonstrating the complexity and dynamic nature of this art.
