The Church of Santa Maria is located in the heart of Faro's historic area, in Largo da Sé, within the Sé and São Pedro zone. This location, characterized by tranquil streets, invites a calm stroll, immersed in the traditional atmosphere of the old city. Its dominant presence in the square defines this space as a cultural and architectural landmark.
The construction of the Church of Santa Maria began in 1251, soon after the Christian reconquest of Faro. It is believed that the building was erected on the remains of an ancient early Christian basilica, which had previously been a mosque. Throughout the centuries, the church was shaped by various historical events. In 1596, a violent looting and fire by English troops caused significant damage, leading to a major reconstruction. Despite the alterations, the church retains original Gothic elements, visible in the facade tower and in some chapels, which contrast with the interior, redesigned in subsequent styles, such as Mannerist and Baroque.
The interior of the Church of Santa Maria reveals a remarkable artistic ensemble, the result of various construction and renovation periods. Notable are the elaborate gilded woodcarvings that enrich the chapels, lending them a distinct glow. The walls are adorned with 17th-century tile panels, some of them figurative, contributing to the visual richness of the space. In the high choir, the 18th-century organ is a central piece, noteworthy for its construction and decoration, which still today makes its presence felt with its imposing beauty.
For those seeking a different view, ascending the church's bell tower offers a rewarding experience. From its top, it is possible to contemplate a wide perspective over Faro, observing the rooftops of the historic city and glimpsing the marina. The view also extends over the vast and rich natural landscape of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, offering an understanding of Faro's strategic location, between its urban heritage and the surrounding natural beauty.
