The exhibition is located in Quarteira, an emblematic place known for its connection to the sea and fishing. It is housed in the Antiga Lota (Old Fish Auction House), a building that itself carries memories of the fishing community and is situated near the Fishing Port. Its position offers a glimpse into the maritime life that has always characterized this locality, framing the historical past that the exhibition uncovers within a current environment of strong fishing identity.
This exhibition invites visitors on an exploration through six millennia of history of Quarteira. It presents the journey of the community and the territory, from the first human occupations to the present day. It is an opportunity to understand how people settled, lived, worked, and shaped the landscape, reflecting on the continuities and transformations that defined the region's identity.
Through archaeological finds, the exhibition reveals a wide range of historical vestiges, many of which were submerged, highlighting Quarteira's long and intrinsic relationship with the sea. Here, one finds a sample of the richness of the local archaeological heritage, with pieces documenting various eras, from prehistory and protohistory to the Roman and Islamic periods, passing through the formation of the Kingdom of the Algarve and the development of the parish until the 20th century. These pieces, some lent by important national institutions, enrich the narrative and allow a direct connection with Quarteira's ancestral legacy.
The exhibition was designed to be accessible and engaging, utilizing multimedia elements that facilitate the understanding of its content by all visitors, including the youngest. One of the distinctive aspects is how the exhibition journey culminates in a reflection on the future, encouraging visitors to share their vision for Quarteira in 2050. This dialogue between the past and the future reinforces the sense of belonging and pride in the history and identity of the local community.
