Manuel Teixeira Gomes was the seventh president of the Portuguese First Republic, between 1923 and 1925.
Manuel Teixeira Gomes was born on May 27, 1860, and was educated by his parents until he entered Colégio de São Luís Gonzaga in Portimão. Later, he moved to Lisbon and became part of the intellectual circle of the time.
Teixeira Gomes had a significant political and diplomatic career. He was Minister Plenipotentiary in London and Madrid, representative of Portugal at the Paris Peace Conference, and a member of the League of Nations.
In 1923, Manuel Teixeira Gomes was elected President of the Republic. During his term, there was political instability and several changes of government.
Due to pressure and political instability, Teixeira Gomes resigned from the Presidency of the Republic in 1925. He then went into voluntary exile and never returned to Portugal.
Manuel Teixeira Gomes left a considerable literary work, which reflects his artistic sensibility. Some of his best-known works include "Cartas a Columbano" and "Novelas Eróticas".
To honor the legacy of Manuel Teixeira Gomes, a street in Marvila, Lisbon, was named after him.
