Convent and Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Category: Nature > Protected Area

District: Faro > Tavira > Tavira > Marlin

Location

The Convent and Church of Our Lady of Carmo is located in Tavira, in Largo do Carmo. The complex is situated in an elevated area of the city, which gives it a prominent presence in the urban landscape. The church's main facade opens onto a spacious square, while the body of the former convent extends into a walled courtyard, providing a distinct atmosphere in the heart of the locality.

Historical Overview

The history of this monastic complex dates back to the 18th century. Its foundation was requested in 1737 by the Third Order of Our Lady of Carmo of Tavira, with construction beginning around 1745. However, the construction extended for an unusually long period, and when the Religious Orders were abolished in 1834, the building was still not entirely completed. Over the following decades, the space adapted to various uses, serving as an asylum for disadvantaged children and, later, as a fishing school. Currently, part of the former convent continues to host services for a social institution, and the church space has been transformed into a science center, dedicated to disseminating knowledge through practical and experimental activities.

Architectural and Artistic Heritage

This remarkable religious complex is an example of Baroque architecture in Portugal, combining influences from the Rococo and Neoclassical styles. The church is recognized as one of the most sumptuous in the Algarve region and an emblematic example of national Rococo. Inside, with a single nave and a Latin cross plan, one can admire the opulence of the gilded and polychrome carving that adorns the various altars, both in the nave and in the transept. The main altarpiece is a piece of great value, considered a reference in Portuguese carving, executed by masters Domingos de Almeida and Patricio Malatesta. Special attention should be paid to the illusionistic painting that covers the ceiling of the chancel, by the painter Joaquim José Rasquinho, which creates an impressive sense of depth and perspective. The side walls of the chancel also feature canvases narrating episodes from the life of Saint Elijah, and the marble floor, in a checkerboard pattern, contributes to the grandeur of the ensemble.

A Classified Legacy

Given its significant historical, cultural, and architectural importance, the Convent and Church of Our Lady of Carmo has been classified as a Monument of Public Interest since 2012. This classification highlights its heritage value and its relevance as a testament to the art and religious history of the Algarve, offering a perspective on architectural evolution and the various functions a secular building can assume.
