Located in the historic center of Lagos, in Largo Vasco Garcia, within the city walls.
Large building with a single nave and vaulted ceiling. The chancel has a rectangular shape and a dome with a lantern. The exterior is simple, without decorations, following the guidelines of the Carmelite Order.
The church has a rich collection, including religious pieces, vestments, coins, and ceramic elements.
The church was built in the 15th century, initially being a hermitage dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição. In the 16th century, the Convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo was installed next to the church by the Discalced Carmelites. The complex was damaged by the 1755 earthquake. In 1833, the convent was closed due to a decree that extinguished religious associations with fewer than twelve members.
In the 19th century, the convent was divided between the Lagos City Council and a private individual. The old cloister was used for the construction of the Gil Vicente Theatre. Subsequently, the space was occupied by the Vitorino Damásio Technical School and, later, by the Industrial School.
In 2004, a protocol was signed for the transfer of the building to the municipality for restoration works. The space was rehabilitated and is currently used by the Lagos Choir Group for music classes, rehearsals and concerts.
There are plans for conservation, restoration and recovery of the interior decoration of the church, as well as for the installation of the Lagos Youth Space in the former premises of the Gil Eanes School.
