The Iberian Lynx Enclosures are located in the area of São Bartolomeu de Messines, in the municipality of Silves. This location, in the interior of the Algarve, offers a natural and serene setting, crucial for the activities developed on site, away from more populated areas.

The rural surroundings provide an ideal environment for the conservation of such a delicate and emblematic species as the Iberian lynx, fitting into a landscape that reflects the region's scenic beauty.

A Unique Conservation Effort

This center plays a fundamental role in the recovery of the Iberian lynx, one of the most endangered felines in the world. Its primary mission is captive breeding, an essential pillar to increase the number of individuals of this species and, thus, ensure its continuity.

Since its inauguration, the site has been responsible for the birth of many lynx cubs, contributing decisively to the revitalization of the wild population. The work developed here focuses on maintaining the species' genetic diversity, a vital factor for its long-term resilience.

Preparation for Wild Life

In the various areas of the enclosures, young lynx cubs are carefully prepared for the challenge of life in freedom. An integral part of this process is hunting training, where the animals learn to acquire the necessary skills to seek and capture their own prey, such as rabbits, just as they would in their natural habitat.

It is a priority that the lynxes develop autonomy and avoid familiarity with human presence, crucial aspects for a successful reintroduction. Specialized teams closely monitor the animals' behavior, ensuring that each lynx is capable of surviving independently after its release.

A Milestone in Species Recovery

Inaugurated in 2009, this center is the result of a significant partnership between Portugal and Spain, symbolizing a shared commitment to the conservation of the Iberian lynx. Its existence reflects the importance of cross-border collaboration for the protection of endangered species.

The continuous work in the enclosures has been instrumental in the remarkable increase of the Iberian lynx population in the Iberian Peninsula. Many of the lynxes that now thrive in wild territories were born and prepared at this site, demonstrating the positive impact on the species' recovery and dispersal.
