The Albufeira Arts and Crafts Centre occupies the former courthouse building, at Rua da Igreja Nova, nº 15, in the heart of Albufeira. Its rehabilitation integrates a recent urban intervention that has enhanced the historic space while maintaining its presence within the urban fabric.
The building is situated within a dense urban network, with narrow streets typical of the historic area. Natural light enters the interior through openings that balance a sense of tradition with an airy and contemporary atmosphere. The internal courtyards, mentioned as part of the structure, contribute to a transition between the urban exterior and the exhibition and workshop spaces.
The centre resulted from the adaptation of the former Albufeira courthouse, an urban requalification project supported by European funds within the Urban Regeneration Action Plan. This transformation preserved the building's identity while introducing cultural and training programs. The intervention is organized on different levels: the ground floor houses the reception, exhibition, and multipurpose spaces, while below, on the -1 floor, are the areas dedicated to training and work, also including a courtyard.
The space combines the memory of the past with a structure designed to accommodate creative practices, maintaining a balance between the building's solidity and the lightness of the artistic activities taking place there.
The centre is dedicated to promoting knowledge and techniques related to arts and crafts. The program includes temporary exhibitions, live demonstrations, and training courses of varying durations. Creative workshops allow participants to learn basic artisanal techniques, while longer workshops aim to value and revitalize traditions, also incorporating contemporary approaches.
The training component is carried out in partnership with institutions specialized in craftsmanship and heritage, reinforcing the focus on skills transfer and the recognition of the value of regional manual practices. The exhibition space and the "know-how" moments combine to offer an integrated perspective of artistic and artisanal creation.
The interior of the centre presents a serene atmosphere, with light wooden flooring and high ceilings that enhance the sense of spaciousness and light. The image shows a suspended sculptural installation, composed of organic and textured forms that combine threads, textile elements, and sinuous metal structures. These pieces appear to float in space, creating a dialogue between artisanal materiality and contemporary aesthetics.
The contrast between the white walls, the natural light, and the complex details of the artwork reinforces the contemplative character of the space. The presence of adaptable exhibition areas, such as the multipurpose room, allows for varied formats, from static displays to live work, without losing visual coherence.
