The Lagos Live Science Centre is situated right in the heart of the city, in the area designated as Bairro Operário. Its location is easily accessible, reachable from Rua Dr. Faria e Silva or from the terrace of the Municipal Market. The Centre is strategically positioned between the Municipal Market and the Church of São Sebastião, and its location offers a view towards Avenida dos Descobrimentos and the bay of Lagos.
The outdoor spaces, such as the Lighthouse Garden and the Discoveries Garden, take advantage of this privileged location, providing views of the Lagos maritime landscape.
The Live Science Centre is housed in the Casa Fogaça, an old 18th-century manor house, which exhibits distinctive features of Pombaline architecture. This stately home was donated to the city by its last owner and carefully adapted to accommodate the centre.
During the adaptation works, archaeological remains of interest were discovered, such as inhumations and fragments of pottery dating back to earlier centuries, enriching the historical value of the site where the Centre is located, adding layers of history to the visit.
This centre is dedicated to scientific and technological dissemination, with a particular focus on the sciences and arts that propelled the Portuguese Discoveries. Visitors are invited to explore themes such as cartography, shipbuilding, and astronomy through interactive and experimental activities, where science and technology intersect in a fun and educational way.
The permanent exhibition, titled "From the Astrolabe to GPS," establishes a captivating link between the great discoveries of the past and the technological innovations of the present. The Centre regularly presents temporary exhibitions on various themes, always ensuring new perspectives on the world of knowledge.
The Lagos Live Science Centre is a place where learning meets fun, allowing visitors of all ages to interact directly with scientific concepts. The premise that "touching is mandatory" encourages practical exploration and active engagement, making the visit a dynamic and memorable experience.
In addition to the indoor exhibition spaces, the Centre boasts almost two thousand square meters of outdoor areas dedicated to science, including its Science Garden. There is also a themed room designated as the "Submarine Room" and a multipurpose space equipped for lectures and various activities, including a small open-air auditorium. These facilities promote the adventure of learning in a playful and relaxed manner.
