The Governors' Castle is located in the city of Lagos, in the very heart of the Algarve. It is strategically positioned in the city's historic area, an integral part of what is known as the Bairro Operário (Workers' Quarter). Its location next to the Jardim da Constituição (Constitution Garden), a pleasant green space, complements its presence in the urban fabric and offers a tranquil environment for contemplation. This site provides an understanding of Lagos's old defensive line, which merges with the riverside landscape.
The Governors' Castle is a pivotal point in the long history of Lagos and its defence system. Its origins are believed to date back to an ancient Islamic alcazaba, a fortress erected during Muslim rule. Its existence is confirmed by historical records from the 14th century, a period when it was already part of the city's medieval wall circuit. Over the centuries, the castle underwent various expansions and adaptations, notably the works carried out during the Renaissance, which included the addition of an exterior bastion, strengthening its defensive capability. From the second half of the 16th century, the structure became the official residence of the governors of the Algarve, which gave it the designation by which it is popularly known. Although it suffered considerable damage in the 1755 earthquake, it was never fully rebuilt, having been partially converted into a hospital in the 19th century. In 1924, it was classified as a National Monument, and in the mid-20th century, important restoration works were carried out to preserve its historical relevance.
This monument is a testament to the evolution of Portuguese military architecture between the 14th and 17th centuries. Its original plan, presumed to have been polygonal, was successively adapted and expanded, with the integration of a Renaissance bastion on its exterior. By observing the castle, it is possible to distinguish the different styles and construction phases, revealing how defensive techniques were refined over time. Its structure, despite having undergone modifications and currently being integrated into other constructions, maintains the imposing character expected of a fortress. The visible architectural elements allow for an understanding of the robustness and military engineering of the era, being a fundamental piece in interpreting the organization and defence of Lagos's historic centre.
Beyond its purely defensive function, the Governors' Castle is immersed in memories and legends that enrich its visit. Tradition tells that it was from a small Manueline window of this castle that King D. Sebastião attended an open-air mass and addressed the Algarve nobility, shortly before departing for the fateful Battle of Alcácer Quibir. This episode, laden with symbolism, links the castle to one of the most enigmatic monarchs in Portuguese history and to a decisive moment for the kingdom's destiny. Its presence in the heart of the city, even if partially in ruins or incorporated into more recent buildings, continues to evoke a past of great importance for Lagos and for the nation.
