The Castle of São João de Arade is located in Ferragudo, in the municipality of Lagoa, in an elevated position on the right bank of the Arade River, just before its mouth into the Atlantic Ocean. This location offers a wide and unobstructed view of the riverside area and the sea, standing out in the village's skyline.
Its proximity to the confluence of the river and the ocean reveals the castle's strategic importance, as it controlled fluvial and maritime access, allowing for the monitoring of vessel traffic navigating in the region.
The castle was commissioned for construction starting in 1644, during the reign of D. João IV, in the context of the Portuguese Restoration War, with the primary objective of defending the mouth of the Arade River against attacks by pirates and invaders. This fortification represented a fundamental line of defense to protect the Algarve coast and ensure control over the river's entrance.
Before the castle's construction, the area already held economic and strategic importance since Roman times, as evidenced by archaeological remains linked to the fish salting industry, demonstrating the area's long-standing connection to maritime and commercial activity.
The Castle of São João de Arade features a trapezoidal plan, centered around a main tower that served as a command and observation post. Around it, vestiges of defensive structures remain, including platforms used for installing artillery pieces, underscoring its military role and its adaptation to 17th-century coastal defense techniques.
Despite alterations and repairs made primarily in the 18th century, the castle's original configuration remains clearly recognizable, reflecting the typical design of coastal fortresses of that era.
Currently classified as a Property of Public Interest, the castle is part of a private property, which limits direct access to the monument. Nevertheless, its silhouette continues to mark the serene atmosphere of Ferragudo, combining historical presence with the natural landscape of the river mouth.
The castle's surroundings offer a tranquil setting, where one can appreciate the contrast between the military fortification and the proximity to the water, reinforcing the historical and natural character of the site.
