Alcoutim Castle is situated in the village and Municipality of Alcoutim, in the Algarve region of Portugal. Its commanding position on a hill south of the settlement offers panoramic views of the Guadiana River and the border with Spain.
The castle's origins date back to prehistory, with traces of Roman occupation. During the Muslim period, another castle known as the Old Castle of Alcoutim (Castelo Velho de Alcoutim) existed. The medieval castle was built in the 13th century during the Christian Reconquista.
Alcoutim Castle played a significant role in Portuguese history. The Treaty of Alcoutim, which ended the first Fernandine War, was signed here in 1371. The castle also underwent defensive enhancements during the Portuguese Restoration War.
The castle has a rectangular layout, approximately 50 meters long by 40 meters wide, constructed from irregular stone. Its walls feature a pointed arch gateway (ogival arch), dating back to the monument's Gothic period.
After a period of neglect, the castle underwent consolidation and restoration work in the 1960s. Later, in 1992, a revitalization project began, culminating in the castle's classification as a Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público) in 1993.
Inside the castle, there is a museum showcasing the region's archaeological heritage, with artifacts dating from the Neolithic to the Modern Period. There is also a permanent exhibition dedicated to Islamic board games from the Moorish period.
Visitors to Alcoutim Castle can enjoy breathtaking views of the Guadiana River, the surrounding hills, and the border with Spain. The natural landscape and the tranquility of the location contribute to a memorable experience.
In addition to exploring the castle and museum, visitors can enjoy other activities in the area, such as hiking, boat trips on the Guadiana River, and visiting the village of Alcoutim, with its picturesque streets and welcoming atmosphere.
Alcoutim is known for hosting cultural events and festivals throughout the year, offering tourists the opportunity to participate in traditional celebrations, fairs, and exhibitions, enriching their cultural experience in the region.
Alcoutim Castle is easily accessible, with nearby parking available. Tourists can obtain additional information at the visitor centre or local tourist information points regarding opening hours, admission fees, and special events.
