The Poet's House is located on Rua General Humberto Delgado, in the city of Faro, more specifically in the Sé and São Pedro area. This residential area developed in the 1940s and 1950s, featuring an urban fabric characteristic of that period, with quiet streets and a tranquil environment.
Surrounded by a small garden space at the front and a backyard at the rear, the house is set within a serene urban context, where the architecture of the dwelling contrasts with the city's contemporary evolution, making the site a point of interest for those who value the 20th-century Algarvian residential heritage.
The current house was designed in 1944 by architect Jorge Ribeiro de Oliveira, at a time when the Faro City Council planned the urban layout of the Alto de Santo António area. The construction replaced an old dwelling of the poet Dr. Cândido Guerreiro that existed in the area before the urban intervention.
This project aimed to preserve and reinterpret the values of Algarvian architectural identity, reusing materials from the old demolished house. The resulting dwelling reflects an idealized vision of traditional Algarve housing, characteristic of the 1940s and 1950s.
With an irregular plan and comprising a single floor, the Poet's House features articulated volumes and gabled roofs, typical of the region. Notable elements include the prominent eaves and the round arches of the porch that evoke traditional Algarvian architecture, balancing functionality and aesthetics.
A distinctive feature is the lacework chimney, a decorative element that gives a unique touch to the construction. The main facade, facing south, includes openings of different shapes, namely perfect arch doors and windows, which align with the building's regional language.
The Poet's House Dr. Cândido Guerreiro is a landmark of 20th-century Algarvian residential architecture, representing the dialogue between tradition and modernity. Although the current dwelling does not correspond to the original house where the poet lived, the site maintains a symbolic link to his memory, standing out as municipal heritage in the process of classification.
This residence highlights the importance of architecture as a cultural expression and regional identity, reflecting a period when modernity was integrated with respect for local roots.
