Colonel Fonseca's House is located in the historic center of Faro, on a corner near the Church of São Pedro. Its facades face three streets: Rua Filipe Alistão, Largo de São Pedro, and Rua José Estevão, situated in an old and quiet neighborhood.
This two-story building stands out for its four gable roofs, an uncommon feature in the city. The windows on the upper floor, especially on the facades facing Largo de São Pedro and Rua Filipe Alistão, feature balconies with typical 19th-century iron railings. The construction is simple and elegant, reflecting the traditional Algarvian style.
It was the home of Colonel António dos Santos Fonseca, a military man and an active figure in local culture. His daughter Ema, who became a renowned singer and musicologist in Portugal, was born here. The house thus preserves an important family and cultural connection to Faro.
Although the building is quite degraded, it retains its value as an example of 18th-century architecture in the city. It is protected as municipal heritage, which helps to preserve the memory and historical atmosphere of Faro's center.
