The Chapel of the Mount is located in a rural area of Monte da Charneca, in the locality of Barão de São João, municipality of Lagos. Built on the highest point of a private property, the chapel benefits from a position that offers views over the surrounding landscape. This location, a short distance from the village of Barão de São João, places it in an environment of tranquility, away from urban hustle, but with a natural connection to the Algarve identity.
Conceived by the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, laureate of the prestigious Pritzker Prize, the Chapel of the Mount is a remarkable work inaugurated in March 2018. It represents Siza Vieira's first project in the Algarve, distinguishing itself by its architectural purity. The author himself described it as a "pure architectural project", reflecting his design philosophy that seeks the essence of space through simplicity and integration with the environment.
The chapel features a minimalist form and a geometry that harmoniously integrates with the rural landscape. With approximately 65 m², this single-story structure is built with materials predominantly in earth tones, such as a beige-pink stucco, which mirrors the region's hues. The use of thermal brick and a green roof contribute to natural temperature regulation, keeping the interior cool in summer and cozy in winter, without the need for electricity or running water, demonstrating a sustainable approach linked to Portuguese vernacular architecture.
Primarily intended as a space for prayer and silent contemplation, the Chapel of the Mount is a serene Christian site, although its architecture engages with a wider audience. Inside, natural light enters through a large two-leaf window, illuminating an environment of profound tranquility. The furniture, including the altar, the cross, the benches, and the chairs, was custom-designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira and crafted from wood. The tile panels, made by the historic Viúva Lamego factory from Siza's drawings, adorn the entrance chamber, depicting biblical scenes and a passage from the prophet Isaiah, handwritten by the architect, which served as inspiration for the project.
The chapel's forecourt, with an area similar to that of the building, extends into the surroundings, creating a meditative space that strengthens the connection between the structure and nature. This design promotes visual and spiritual continuity with the landscape, inviting introspection. The careful integration of the chapel into its environment, from the choice of materials to its orientation, makes it a point of interest for those seeking the fusion of art, spirituality, and the natural beauty of the Algarve.
