The Chapel of Mercy is located in the Fishermen's Quarter, by the Albufeira seafront. Nestled in a narrow, traditional cobbled street, it is just a few steps from the beach, set within a cluster of white houses that give the space an intimate character.
The surroundings invite contemplative breaks overlooking the sea and walks along steep streets where urban sounds blend with the Atlantic breeze, creating a serene atmosphere even during high season.
Built upon a small chapel of the old castle, the Misericórdia (Mercy) was established in 1499 as the headquarters of a confraternity providing assistance to the most needy. In the 1755 earthquake, a large part of the structure was destroyed and later rebuilt, retaining vestiges of the original Manueline portal.
Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, renovation works took place (notably in the chancel and the annexed hospital) as a result of Santa Casa's commitment to fulfilling its social support mission.
The façade features a portal with a broken profile, decorated with roped motifs and supported by small, capitalled columns. Above it, a window of similar perimeter opens, interrupting the frieze of the triangular pediment at the top.
The interior features a single stuccoed nave, a wooden choir loft, and a triumphal arch supported by twisted columns. The chancel boasts a ribbed vault and an 18th-century gilded altarpiece, where the image of Our Lady of the Visitation stands out, flanked by the statues of Fátima and Saint Elizabeth.
