Segment B of the Roman Road is located in the Alcaria area, in the municipality of São Brás de Alportel. This segment of the ancient Roman road is nestled in an environment that blends peri-urban characteristics with the tranquility of a more rural landscape, developing in a valley situated south of the town of São Brás de Alportel.
Its location allows visitors to appreciate a calm environment, ideal for a walk that invites the discovery of vestiges from a distant past.
This segment is a remnant of the grand Roman road network that once traversed the province of Lusitania. The Roman Road of São Brás de Alportel was part of Antonine Itinerary XXI, a crucial route that connected the ancient city of Ossonoba, present-day Faro, northward. Dating back to the Roman era, this road played a fundamental role in the region's transport and communication.
Its preservation as a historical-cultural landmark allows for a direct connection to the ancient history of the Algarve, offering a perspective on the infrastructures and daily life of that time.
With an extension of approximately 250 meters, Segment B stands out for presenting its original Roman paving. It is an opportunity to closely observe the construction technique and materials used almost two millennia ago. Along this route, it is possible to note the use of local stone for the walls that delimit the ancient road, integrating it harmoniously into the Algarve landscape.
The simplicity and robustness of its original construction continue to bear witness to Roman engineering and its durability, despite the passage of centuries.
The area surrounding Segment B is equally rich in history, having been the scene of important archaeological discoveries. In its vicinity, various graves were found, and the artifacts from one of them suggest it may have belonged to a Roman soldier. These findings add a layer of interest to the site, revealing the presence and aspects of the life of those who used this road in ancient times.
Currently, the segment serves not only as a point of historical interest but also as a place for cultural and recreational strolls, where the tranquility of nature combines with the richness of heritage.
