The Roman Calçadinha is located in the village of Calçada, in the municipality of São Brás de Alportel. It extends through a valley situated south of the main inhabited area of the village, in a setting that combines rural elements with urban proximity. Along some sections of its route, the path is bordered by traditional stone walls of the region, harmonizing with the surrounding natural landscape.
This path is a testament to the profound Roman presence in the Algarve region. The Roman Calçadinha was part of the imposing Antonine Itinerary XXI, one of the most crucial Roman routes that crossed the ancient province of Lusitania to the south. It was built with the purpose of connecting the ancient city of Ossonoba, which corresponds to present-day Faro, to other points further north, serving as a fundamental axis for circulation in the Roman era.
Of the original route, built in Roman times, remains extend for approximately 1350 meters. There are two main identified sections: one with about 100 meters and another, partially paved with stones, which stretches for approximately 250 meters. Although its function as a major road diminished with the arrival of modern routes in the 19th century, the Calçadinha remained alive in the local landscape, being used as a path for walkers and for the transit of herds. Currently, it represents an important historical-cultural and recreational landmark, inviting an experience of connection with the past.
Walking along the Calçadinha provides a tranquil experience, set in a predominantly rural and genuine environment of the Algarve landscape. The historical importance of this site is further reinforced by archaeological discoveries made in its vicinity. Among them are some tombs, one of which, due to the artifacts found, suggests it belonged to a Roman soldier. These discoveries enrich the narrative of the Calçadinha, revealing the life and stories that once unfolded along this ancient route.
