Cais O is located in the city of Lagos, specifically in the Bairro Operário area. It is an integral part of the council's redeveloped waterfront, positioned by the water and offering a perspective over the Ribeira de Bensafrim basin.
This site is historically framed between what was once the Governors' Castle and the former Customs House (Casa da Dízima), a strategic point for the connection between the walled city and its maritime access.
Over the centuries, this entry and exit point for vessels in Lagos was known by various names, such as Cais da Ribeira, Cais de Alcântara, or Cais da Alfândega. It represented a central axis in port and commercial life, functioning as a true antechamber to the city.
In times past, its structure was directly articulated with the 16th-century city wall, through specific gates. These allowed not only controlled circulation between the inside of the walls and the outside, but also direct access for travelers and goods to the urban core, emphasizing its strategic and logistical importance for Lagos.
In the 1940s, the area where Cais O is located was buried to allow for the construction of Avenida da Guiné. However, in more recent years, the site underwent an extensive urban requalification project that brought it back to the surface, integrating it harmoniously into the landscape of Lagos' waterfront.
Currently, Cais O offers an open and inviting environment, ideal for a peaceful stroll by the water. It is a point where visitors can observe the fluvial and maritime dynamics in the river, or simply enjoy the calm atmosphere and the view over the renovated urban area of Lagos.
