Cais M is located in the city of Lagos, within the urban area known as Bairro Operário. Situated along the coastline, this point marks where the Bensafrim Stream meets the ocean. Its strategic position offers an open perspective over the bay and the sea.
This area is part of a revitalized waterfront, harmoniously integrated into Lagos' urban landscape, providing an accessible and inviting space by the water.
This pier boasts a rich past, having been known by various names over time, such as Cais da Ribeira (Riverside Pier), Cais de Alcântara, or Cais da Alfândega (Customs Pier). In its historical role, it was a crucial point for accessing the city, serving as an interface between the old 16th-century walls and the urban center.
Throughout the 20th century, this area underwent transformations, eventually being partially buried. However, it was later reclaimed and revalued, revealing its original configuration and reintegrating into Lagos' public domain, bearing witness to its importance in the locality's development.
Cais M stands out for its pontoon structure, extending approximately 160 meters, projecting over the water. This construction offers a unique view of the coastline and the surrounding natural formations.
From this location, it is possible to contemplate the confluence of the river with the Atlantic, creating a scenario of tranquility and beauty, ideal for those who appreciate proximity to the maritime environment.
This pier annually hosts a peculiar celebration deeply rooted in local culture: the Festa do Banho 29 (Bath Festival 29). This festivity, which takes place on the night of August 29th, fills the location with a spirit of conviviality and celebration, strengthening the community's connection to its origins and the sea.
The persistence of this tradition underscores the relevance of Cais M as a space for gathering and cultural exchange for the inhabitants of Lagos.
