Location

Cais L is located in the city of Lagos, within the Bairro Operário area. It is situated right on the waterfront, an area offering views of the estuary basin and the maritime dynamics. It serves as a connecting point between the city's urban fabric and its water mirror, marking the transition between land and sea in the Lagos landscape.

A Historical Legacy

This site boasts a profound history, dating back to times when it functioned as one of Lagos' vital quays. Historically known by various names, such as Cais da Ribeira, Cais de Alcântara, or Cais da Alfândega, it was a fundamental infrastructure for accessing the city. It served as a point of entry and exit for goods and people, playing a crucial role in the development and daily life of Lagos throughout the centuries.

Architectural and Urban Relevance

Cais L, in its current form, is the result of a significant urban intervention. The area where these old quays were located was, for part of the 20th century, hidden beneath an avenue built over the riverbed. However, its bed was rediscovered and integrated into the city's redeveloped waterfront, revealing its original form.

Observing Cais L today is to witness a part of the old port structure, which now harmoniously integrates into the contemporary urban landscape. Its presence is a tangible testament to Lagos' urban evolution, showing how the city values and displays its historical layers.
