Cais G is strategically positioned on the riverside of Lagos, an area that offers a direct connection with the Ria de Alvor. This historic site is located precisely between the emblematic Castelo dos Governadores and the area where the Casa da Dízima once stood, two significant reference points in the city's ancient topography. Its location invites the observation of aquatic movement and the surrounding landscape, providing a unique perspective on the city and its bay.
This quay, historically known by different names such as "Cais da Ribeira", "Cais de Alcântara", or "Cais da Alfândega", played a vital role in the life of Lagos throughout the centuries. In the 16th century, it represented a main access point to the city. Two ancient gates, integrated into the robust wall of the time, functioned as an antechamber, regulating circulation and ensuring the connection between the port area and the interior of the defensive walls. The presence of the wall and these gates highlights the strategic and commercial importance of this point throughout history.
During the 1940s, the area where Cais G is located today was subject to landfill to make way for the construction of Avenida da Guiné, thus hiding its past. However, in more recent times, as part of a significant requalification of the Riverside Front, this old quay was brought back to light. Today, Cais G is once again visible and fully integrated into the urban landscape, allowing visitors to appreciate and understand the historical evolution of this part of the city and its relationship with the sea and the river.
Cais G offers a tranquil atmosphere for those seeking a moment of pause by the water. Its requalification has created an open and inviting space, where one can enjoy the sea breeze and observe the daily life of the estuary. It is a point where historical legacy meets the modern life of the city, inviting reflection on the layers of time that have shaped Lagos, without the need to seek other attractions beyond the quay's environment itself.
