Art Reef is located off the coast of Albufeira, in the Algarve, about one mile from the shoreline and at a depth of approximately 12 metres. Its underwater location means that the site is observed within the marine environment itself, where light, water and the natural movement of the sea transform the perception of the pieces.
Set within a submerged area of around 1,250 square metres, the ensemble is integrated into the seabed and was designed to relate directly to the underwater landscape. The surroundings are marked by the marine life of the Algarve coast and by the natural evolution of the artificial reef over time.
Art Reef is the first submerged art exhibition in Portugal. The work was created by Alexandre Farto, known as Vhils, a Portuguese artist recognised for his use of urban materials and for creating images through the transformation of surfaces.
The ensemble consists of 13 pieces, made of iron and concrete. The works are arranged in several clusters and were conceived to create a visual route linked to the relationship between people and the sea, exploring themes such as memory, transformation, use of resources and connection to the natural environment.
The pieces in Art Reef were created from materials taken from former decommissioned thermoelectric power stations. Before being placed in the sea, these materials underwent cleaning, decarbonisation and decontamination processes to ensure their adaptation to the underwater environment.
This reuse gives the project a strong symbolic dimension. Elements once linked to energy production were transformed into art and placed on the seabed, where they take on a new ecological and cultural function.
In addition to its artistic value, Art Reef was designed to function as an artificial reef. The submerged structures provide surfaces and shelters that can be occupied by marine organisms, contributing to the development of a new habitat on the seabed.
Over time, the pieces cease to be merely sculptures and become part of the ecosystem. The presence of marine flora and fauna gradually changes the appearance of the works, creating an ongoing relationship between human intervention and nature.
Art Reef brings together contemporary art, environmental awareness and underwater observation in a single space. The proposal is not limited to the contemplation of the sculptures, as it also invites reflection on the protection of the oceans and on the way materials can acquire new meanings.
For those observing the site underwater, the interest lies in the encounter between the scale of the pieces, the depth, the light filtered by the sea and the growing presence of marine life. It is an experience connected to art, but also to the slow and visible transformation of the underwater environment.
