Located in Armação de Pêra, this unique building stands on Avenida Beira-Mar, right in the heart of the town. Its privileged position near the southern edge of the settlement, in the vicinity of the cliff, offers a direct and wide view of the beach and the Atlantic Ocean. The exterior space surrounding it includes a wide promenade, decorated with geometric motifs and with the inscription "CASINO" on the pavement, inviting a coastal stroll.
The Old Casino of Armação de Pêra is a landmark of significant historical and cultural value for the town. Built in the mid-20th century, specifically in 1958, this building was once a central point of Armação de Pêra's social and recreational life. It was a space where the community and visitors gathered for dances, concerts, and other social activities, becoming an integral part of the local collective memory. Recognizing its importance, it was classified as a Monument of Municipal Interest.
The design of the Old Casino of Armação de Pêra reflects a modern architectural language for its time. The building features a rectangular plan, with volumes that step and flat concrete slab roofs. The north-facing facades exhibit a more linear and horizontal design, contrasting with the undulating dynamism of the south facade. The latter, facing the sea, is distinguished by its large openings that provide unobstructed views over the coastal landscape. The initial project was signed by architect Tavela de Sousa, and later, in 1978, the building was expanded under the vision of architect José Sobral Blanco.
Currently, the Old Casino of Armação de Pêra is undergoing a rehabilitation process. The objective of this intervention is to restore its iconic image and return this highly symbolic space to public use. In the future, the building will function as a cultural hub, housing a multi-purpose space dedicated to various cultural, artistic, and recreational activities, such as exhibitions, lectures, and performances. The redevelopment also includes the exterior spaces, seeking to reconcile leisure with the contemplation of the urban and natural landscape, and foresees the possibility of roof access, offering a new perspective on the surroundings.
