The Morabito of São João is located in the picturesque village of Alvor, in the municipality of Portimão, within the area known as "Vila da Praia" (Beach Village). Situated at the top of Alto de São João, the monument is naturally integrated into the traditional urban fabric, flanked by typical houses. Its elevated position offers a unique setting, with glimpses over the Alvor Estuary (Ria de Alvor) and the local pier.
This morabito, also known as the Chapel of São João, is the largest of the three buildings of this type found in Alvor. Its original construction most likely dates back to the 11th or 12th centuries, during the period of Almoravid Islamic rule in the region. Over the centuries, the building underwent various transformations and uses, witnessing the passage of time and cultural changes. It was subject to significant interventions, particularly in the 16th century, and in more recent periods, having been classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1978, acknowledging its heritage value.
The architecture of the Morabito of São João is of a simplicity that accentuates its unique beauty. It features a quadrangular plan and is crowned by a spherical dome, flanked by pinnacles at its corners. Its facades, made of plastered and whitewashed masonry, give it the characteristic white appearance of local architecture. On the main facade, a Latin inscription captures attention: "ego sum vox clamantis in deserto" (I am the voice crying in the wilderness). This phrase reflects the Christianization of the space, symbolizing the transition and coexistence of cultural and religious influences that have marked the history of the village of Alvor.
