This center is located in the city of Faro, specifically in the urban area of Sé and São Pedro. Despite its urban setting, the location offers a remarkable visual connection with the surrounding nature. From its terrace, for instance, a wide view opens onto the Ria Formosa, a lagoon landscape recognized for its natural beauty and as an important stopover and refuge for various migratory birds.
Designed to awaken curiosity for scientific and technological knowledge, the Algarve Life Sciences Center features a permanent exhibition dedicated to the sea. This exhibition invites visitors on a journey of exploration through the marine and coastal biosphere, from the surface to the depths of the oceans. The exhibition helps to unveil aspects about the origin and future of life on our planet, addressing themes such as the evolution of the oceans, marine biodiversity, the physics of the sea and atmosphere, the chemistry of light and color, and the functioning of the brain and senses, always with a keen eye on environmental conservation.
The experience at the center is notably interactive, promoting active participation from its visitors. There are various modules designed to aid in understanding physical and geological phenomena associated with the sea and atmosphere. It is possible to interact with a touch tank, observe simulations of underwater currents, feel an earthquake on a seismic table, or explore the laws of surface tension and the concept of black holes. Outdoors, the garden offers modules dedicated to renewable energies, where one can observe "artificial life" powered by solar and wind micro-generation. Additionally, a smart greenhouse demonstrates "soilless" cultivation methods, such as hydroponics and aeroponics, and allows for the observation of carnivorous plants and other unusual plant species.
At the top of the building, a terrace invites contemplation. This rooftop space offers a panoramic view over the Ria Formosa, allowing for observation of the lagoon landscape and its wildlife, particularly various bird species that use this area as a stopover on their migratory routes. The terrace also integrates thematic modules related to the sun, complementing the scientific aspect with an appreciation of the surrounding natural environment.
