Algar Seco is located in a remarkable section of Lagoa's coastal area, near the town of Carvoeiro. Situated directly atop the cliffs, it overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, benefiting from a location that allows for close observation of the geological features of the Algarve coastline. Its position on the limestone cliffs facilitates pedestrian access, integrating it into the trails that follow the coastline.
This place is distinguished by its unique geological landscape. The ocher-colored rocks have been intensely sculpted over time by the combined action of rainwater and the sea, creating a complex natural labyrinth. Various formations can be observed, including natural wells that gave rise to the site's name, grottoes, and openings in the cliffs that resemble windows or balconies facing the ocean.
The term "algar" technically means a natural well, deriving from ancient words for "cave" or "abyss". Algar Seco was formed by the merging and deepening of several of these natural wells. The limestone cliffs themselves, which make up the landscape, contain fossilized traces of marine life, bearing witness to millions of years of geological history.
Algar Seco offers expansive and impressive views of the coast and the sea. One of the most well-known spots is the rock formation dubbed "A Boneca" (The Doll), a cavity in the cliff that, when viewed from the sea, is said to resemble a doll. Inside this grotto, two natural openings provide unique perspectives of the coastal landscape, making it a highly sought-after location for capturing images.
Beyond contemplation and photography, the site's configuration allows, under certain tidal conditions, for the formation of natural pools among the rocks, inviting a swim. However, it is crucial to move carefully over the rocks, which can be uneven and slippery, especially on wet days. Appropriate footwear is recommended. Note that the site does not have safety barriers in all areas and and may present challenges for those with reduced mobility, requiring special vigilance in the presence of children.
