Erected in the heart of Albufeira's historic center, on Rua Bernardino de Sousa, the tower stands out among the whitewashed houses and narrow alleys. The surroundings offer a setting where medieval features blend with the distant blue of the sea, creating an urban environment with a strong connection to the ocean.
The bell tower dates back to the reconstruction of the village after the 1755 earthquake, when the old belfry connected to the local medieval hospital was replaced. Despite appearing to be a church at first glance, its sole function has always been to mark the hours for residents and visitors.
In the 19th century, the iron crown that supports the main bell emerged, an element that today gives identity to the monument. The simplicity of the white masonry, complemented by the use of stonework in the frames, reflects the traditional solutions adopted in the Algarve's reconstruction.
The contrast between the whiteness of the walls and the stone details creates a play of light and shadow throughout the day. The compact proportions of the tower, without exaggerated ornamentation, maintain a sober character that integrates into the urban fabric without being lost from sight.
From the base of the tower, a privileged perspective reveals the surrounding streets, where buildings line up in subtly inclined terraces. As night falls, the illuminated bell on festive days stands out against the sky, opening up possibilities for photographic records with strong contrast.
