The Eng. Duarte Pacheco Square is located in the historic center of Albufeira, in a more secluded section of the old town, next to the emblematic clock tower. The traditional cobblestone pavement harmonizes with the narrow layout of the adjacent streets, revealing the urban fabric typical of the old city.
Green spaces punctuate the surroundings: trees with wide canopies and flowerbeds create points of shade and color, offering a gentle contrast to the whitewashed facades and the tiles that characterize the urban landscape.
The square was named after Duarte Pacheco Pereira, a distinguished navigator, military man, and cosmographer in the service of the Portuguese kings in the early 16th century. Native of Santarém (although records point to Lisbon), his career marked the Portuguese presence in the Atlantic and the cartography of the time.
Nearby stands an old power station built in 1926, which was rehabilitated in 1988 to house the Pintor Samora Barros Art Gallery. This two-story building, with arched openings and a facade covered in tiles decorated by the artist himself, bears witness to the adaptation of industrial infrastructure for cultural use.
In the square, flowerbeds arranged in geometric patterns stand out, with a variety of flora irrigated by a discreet system that maintains intense colors throughout the year. The benches, made of stone, brick, and wooden planks, invite moments of pause and contemplation.
The clock tower, visible from almost the entire space, serves as a scenic and orienting element. The gallery's arcades allow natural light to filter into the interior, creating a play of shadows that enhances the tiles and highlights the contrast between the traditional and the contemporary.
