The Fountain of Nossa Senhora de Aires is located in the municipality of Viana do Alentejo, in the area known as Horta das Caixinhas. It is situated in the square in front of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora de Aires, set within a vast and tranquil landscape, so characteristic of the Alentejo region.

This location, slightly removed from the urban center, allows visitors to enjoy the serenity of the Alentejo plain.

History and Significance

The history of the Fountain of Nossa Senhora de Aires is deeply linked to the events of 1639. In that year, the town of Viana do Alentejo faced an intense drought, with water scarcity affecting all the fountains and wells in the region.

According to local tradition, water miraculously sprang from the ground when the hermitess of the sanctuary and her husband decided to dig near the church. This event, a source of great hope for the community, led to the construction of the fountain, which was completed on May 12, 1640.

Architectural and Artistic Features

The fountain features a rectangular espaldar with simple lines, highlighted by a protruding frieze. At the top, a triangular pediment in masonry is crowned by pinnacles, giving it a remarkable and harmonious presence with its surroundings.

An element of particular interest is the marble plaque, which perpetuates the memory of the Restoration of Portugal's Independence and displays a sonnet composed in 1640 by Dr. Domingos Coelho Reidono, a native of Viana. Attached to the main structure is a large triangular tank-trough, essential for the site's function. The water emerges through three anthropomorphic gargoyles, which add an expressive and peculiar touch to the architectural ensemble.
