The Chapel of Santo Antão is located in the area of Santo Antão o Novo, an area that is part of the locality of Veiros, in the municipality of Estremoz. It is situated in a clearly rural environment, offering a landscape setting typical of the Alentejo, outside the main urban center.
Although the precise date of its foundation is unknown, the Chapel of Santo Antão already existed at the beginning of the 18th century, which attests to its antiquity. It was also commonly referred to as the Hermitage of Saint Anthony the Abbot, highlighting its connection to religious devotion and the historical context of the region.
The chapel's architecture is marked by simplicity, revealing typical characteristics of rural religious buildings from the 17th or 18th centuries. Currently, the building is in ruins. Upon visiting, one can observe the structure that has survived over time, including the walls and remnants of its original floor plan, immersed in the surrounding landscape and with the nave roof collapsed. This state gives it a picturesque appearance and serves as a memory of the rural past of the place.
