The Veiros Dam is located in the municipality of Estremoz, near the locality of Veiros, from which it takes its name. It is built on the Ribeira de Ana Loura, in a typically rural and tranquil Alentejo setting. Its position allows for appreciation of the vast surrounding landscape, marked by the fields that depend on its waters.

An Essential Structure

Completed and operational between 2007 and 2008, the Veiros Dam represents an engineering work adapted to the local landscape. It is an earth-fill dam, meaning its main structure is composed of compacted layers of earth and other natural materials. This approach provides it with visual integration into its surroundings and demonstrates a specific construction technique.

With its dimensions, including a considerable height and a significant length at the crest (top), the dam is a functional structure that alters the natural dynamics of the watercourse upon which it was built.

The Large Reservoir

Upstream of the dam, a vast reservoir is formed, a large expanse of water that stretches across the landscape. This body of water, which can cover over a square kilometer at its maximum capacity, transforms the surrounding area, creating banks and coves that invite observation and enjoyment of the site's serenity.

The presence of the reservoir not only stores a considerable volume of water, vital for the region, but also offers a relevant scenic dimension, contrasting with the drier profile that the riverbed would naturally have. It is an element that adds life and color to the Alentejo landscape, varying its appearance with the seasons and water levels.

Function and Local Impact

The primary reason for the Veiros Dam's existence is to support agriculture. The water stored in the reservoir is distributed for irrigation of extensive cultivation areas in the parish of Veiros and the neighboring municipality of Monforte. This function is crucial for ensuring the viability of various crops, from olive and almond groves to horticultural produce and cereals.

By ensuring water supply, the dam directly contributes to the productivity and resilience of local agricultural activity, especially during periods of lower rainfall. In this way, it plays a vital role in the region's rural economy and partly shapes the cultivated landscape observed in its vicinity.
