Chapel of Good News

Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Évora > Alandroal > Terena > Sítio da Boa Nova

Location

Situated in an isolated and peaceful spot in Sítio da Boa Nova, this chapel is located about three kilometers from the village of Terena, in the municipality of Alandroal. Its position, on the lower third of a slope and dominating a valley that culminates in the Lucefece stream, gives it an atmosphere of peace and contemplation. Access is via a path marked by ancient cruzeiros (crosses), leading to a large, gently sloping esplanade, where low walls with benches invite a pause, allowing one to contemplate the rural surroundings punctuated by palm trees and eucalyptus trees.

A Historical Legacy

The Chapel of Boa Nova has its roots in the mid-14th century, more precisely in 1340. Its foundation is historically associated with a vow made by Dona Maria, wife of Afonso XI of Castile and daughter of D. Afonso IV of Portugal, in gratitude for the victory in the Battle of Salado. This profound connection to significant events in Peninsular history gives the place a meaning that transcends its religious function. It is, in fact, a monument that echoes centuries of devotion and crucial moments in Portuguese history, having been recognized as a National Monument since 1910.

Architecture with Defensive Features

The structure of the Chapel of Boa Nova is notable for its unique architecture, which combines religious elements with characteristics of a fortress. Built on a Greek cross plan, its interior is entirely covered by vaults. The exterior, in plastered and whitewashed masonry, is crowned by merlons and battlements, typically defensive details that give it a robust and imposing appearance. The facades, visually similar, feature broken-arch doorways and narrow slits surmounted by projecting balconies, formerly used for defense. The main facade is enhanced by a bell tower housing a bronze bell, underscoring its dual nature as both a sanctuary and a bulwark.

An Interior Rich in Artistic Expression

Upon crossing the threshold of the chapel, the visitor encounters a surprisingly distinct interior space. The chancel, which occupies the eastern arm, stands out for its mural compositions. The vaults are entirely filled with twenty rectangular paintings, illustrating biblical passages from the Apocalypse of Saint John and representations of kings from the first Portuguese dynasty, offering a fascinating glimpse into religious and historical art. In the remaining arms, there are mural paintings from the early 20th century, based on 19th-century copies, depicting figures of saints framed by stucco. The side altars complement the artistic richness of the temple with their elaborate carved altarpieces.
