Location

The Sociedade Antiga Filarmónica Montemorense “Carlista” is located in the Bairro de São Pedro, an area integrated into the urban fabric of Montemor-o-Novo. Its presence in this neighborhood contributes to local community life, serving as a cultural landmark in the town, easily accessible to those exploring the area.

A Centenary History

The “Carlista” Society has its roots in the mid-19th century, dating back to a group of musicians who organized themselves around 1830. This initial group was led by Carlos Simões, a name that would inspire the nickname “Carlista” by which the Society is known today. Given the importance of music in Montemor-o-Novo and the relative isolation of the town at that time, the formation of a musical collective was of great relevance. On June 30, 1861, this group of musicians took a formal step, officially transforming into the “Sociedade Antiga Filarmónica Montemorense”. Its formalization, with the approval of its first statutes by royal charter on April 21, 1862, cemented its status as one of the oldest cultural associations in the region.

The Cultural and Artistic Legacy

Throughout its more than one hundred and sixty years of existence, the “Carlista” Society has played a fundamental role in promoting culture in Montemor-o-Novo. In addition to music, its facilities have hosted and continue to host various activities, such as theater, dance, and traditional games like checkers, billiards, and cards, becoming a true community center. From its ranks have emerged numerous musicians and actors who have taken Montemor-o-Novo's culture beyond its borders. Currently, the Philharmonic Band is the Society's highest expression, comprising about forty-five members. Its music school, attended by approximately forty students, ensures the continuity of the musical legacy for future generations.

Recognition and Contribution

The “Carlista” Society's dedication to culture has been widely recognized. Its philharmonic band has participated in various competitions, achieving distinctions. In 2010 and 2011, it participated in the show “As Lágrimas de Saladino” (Saladin's Tears), by choreographer Rui Horta, with performances on prestigious national stages. In June 2011, on the occasion of its 150th anniversary, the Municipality of Montemor-o-Novo awarded it the Municipal Medal of Merit, in recognition of its notable contribution to enhancing the county's name. In 2015, the “Carlista” Society staged a memorable show, “DUnAS BANDAS”, sharing the stage with the well-known group GNR, in an event that highlighted the versatility and quality of its Philharmonic Band.
