Vasco da Gama received here the command of the squadron to discover the sea route to India; Gil Vicente presented six autos dedicated to queens in this palace.
Inhabited by King Manuel I, King João III, King Sebastião, and Philip III.
In 1616, part of the building was ceded to Franciscan friars and adapted into dormitories.
In 1834, after the extinction of religious orders, the palace was partially destroyed for the installation of the Municipal Market and other institutions.
