In the heart of the locality of São Cristóvão, in the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo, stands the Bullring, an easily recognizable landmark in the urban landscape. Often referred to as Praça do Rossio, its presence integrates naturally into the fabric of the Alentejo town, reflecting its importance in community life.
The inauguration of this Bullring in 1882 marked a significant moment for the long bullfighting history of Montemor-o-Novo. The construction of the building that is observed today was driven by António Pedro Sameiro. Already in 1910, the space benefited from important restoration works for its conservation, ensuring the perpetuity of its structure. Beyond bullfighting spectacles, this place has revealed remarkable versatility and social importance over time, having served, for example, as a venue for film screenings until the mid-20th century.
This monument is an indelible testament to the deep and continuous connection of Montemor-o-Novo to bullfighting. Its existence and continued use mirror the strong presence of this tradition in the local identity, which is manifested in the equestrian art of bullfighting on horseback, the bravery of the forcados groups, and the breeding of the region's fighting bulls. Over the decades, the Bullring has served as a stage for the perpetuation of know-how and a spectacle that attracts aficionados. In this way, the space not only maintains its historical and cultural relevance for the community but also continues to be an active stage for bullfighting events, ensuring the continuity of this secular heritage.
