The Chapel of Our Lady of Cabeça is located in the village of Antas, part of the municipality of Estremoz. It is situated within the Santa Maria and Santo André urbanization, offering a point of interest in the local landscape.
This temple has a history dating back at least to the early 17th century, although its exact foundation date remains unknown. Originally, the chapel was dedicated to Saint Peter. However, after 1758, the building underwent significant improvement works. These works were funded, as far as is known, by the region's shepherds, who likely played a fundamental role in the assignment of the new patron saint: Our Lady of Cabeça.
The image of Our Lady of Cabeça, which came to be venerated in this place, was transferred from a nearby chapel, that of Saint Anne, which was in ruins around 1663.
Inside the chapel, despite the marks of time, it is still possible to observe the interesting mural paintings present in the high choir. These works are representative of the 19th-century artistic style, offering a glimpse into the ornamentation of the era and contributing to the singular atmosphere of the space.
