This hermitage is located in the Remédios area, belonging to the locality of São Miguel de Machede, in the municipality of Évora. It is situated in a rural environment, typical of the Alentejo landscape surrounding the city of Évora, offering a tranquil setting for visitors.
Its location allows it to be integrated into a route through the rural area and the small population clusters around Évora.
The construction of the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios did not happen all at once, but rather over several centuries. It is a building that reveals different constructive periods, with elements dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. These initial centuries defined the general structure of the building, including some of its openings and a side portal.
Subsequently, in the 15th and 16th centuries, significant alterations were carried out, such as the introduction of a vaulted ceiling over the main nave and the chancel. The 18th century also left its visible mark, notably in the altarpiece found on the main altar, in a portal, and in the sacristy that was added during this period.
The hermitage features a rectangular plan that extends eastward, with the articulation of different externally visible volumes: the galilee, the nave, and the apse. Each of these parts has its independent roof, with a gable roof over the nave and galilee, and a hipped roof over the apse.
On the main façade, the projection of the galilee stands out, its horizontal coping crowned by merlons. The main entrance, within the galilee, features a perfect round arch and a circular oculus above it. In the nave, there is a narrower portico with an ogee arch lintel. The side façades allow observation of the distinction of the internal volumes and some arrow slits from different periods, with a portal on the north face featuring full-round arches.
The Hermitage of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is recognized for its historical and architectural value. The building has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1982, highlighting its relevance in the region's built heritage landscape.
This classification emphasizes the hermitage's importance as a testament to the evolution of architectural styles over several centuries, from the initial Romanesque-Gothic elements to later interventions, offering an interesting ensemble for those interested in local history and architecture.
