The Pillory of Redondo stands majestically in the heart of the town, more precisely in Praça da República, the village's nerve center. This central position offers visitors a privileged perspective of the vibrant and traditional atmosphere of Redondo, surrounded by buildings that bear witness to the history and daily life of the Alentejo region.
This site invites a moment of contemplation, allowing one to absorb the atmosphere of a village with deep roots in the culture and traditions of the Évora region.
Dating from the 16th century, the Pillory of Redondo is an eloquent testament to the municipal autonomy that the town of Redondo once achieved. Its construction marks the granting of the charter or the renewal of powers conceded by the Crown, signifying the council's right to administer its own justice.
It was at this location that sentences were read, edicts were proclaimed, and, at times, punishments were administered, serving as a nerve center of the community's civic and legal life. Its enduring presence evokes the times when local administration and social order were publicly affirmed.
This architectural example stands out for its distinct typology and the decorative elements characteristic of the Manueline style, a unique Portuguese artistic expression of the period. It rises on a platform of steps, with an anchor supporting the shaft, which is cylindrical and smooth.
Its true charm lies in the capital, which takes the form of an original iron cage composed of four arms ending in spheres, topped by a pyramidal element with an octagonal section. At the base of the main body, it is possible to observe the coat of arms of Redondo, a detail that intrinsically links the monument to the town's identity and history, giving it a unique character and great heritage value.
