The Serra d'Ossa Walkways are located in the picturesque village of Aldeia da Serra, in the municipality of Redondo, revealing a distinct side of the Alentejo. This linear pedestrian route crosses a part of the Serra d'Ossa, connecting Aldeia da Serra to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte da Virgem.
Its position in the mountains provides extensive views over the surrounding landscape, an Alentejo that appears greener here with varied slopes, offering a different perspective of the region.
The walkway route extends for approximately 3.2 kilometers, unfolding on wooden boardwalks that harmoniously integrate into the local vegetation. Along the way, the atmosphere is one of great tranquility, with the sound of nature and the scent of aromatic herbs filling the air.
The route winds through Mediterranean vegetation, passing through cork oak forests and areas with dense shade, where the altitude oscillates between 300 and 400 meters. The landscape is characterized by the presence of umbrella pines, olive trees, and holm oaks, which shape the natural scenery.
The experience at the Serra d'Ossa Walkways is also an encounter with history and how man shaped this territory. Along the route, one can glimpse ancient agricultural spaces with terraces delimited by shale walls, where ancestral water techniques were used.
The route culminates near the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte da Virgem, a place of serene atmosphere with historical records dating back to the 15th century. Near the chapel, it is possible to observe a fountain with a water tank whose construction dates back to 1688, a testament to a distant past.
One of the highlights of a visit to the Serra d'Ossa Walkways are the stunning panoramic views that open up along the path. The walkways offer unique perspectives over the mountains, making the visitor feel immersed in the heart of the sierra.
At the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte da Virgem, the view is particularly privileged, reaching wide sectors of the Alentejo landscape. From the cemetery side, next to the church, it is possible to contemplate a vast expanse covering several municipalities in the region.
