Amieira River Beach is located in the town of Amieira, within the municipality of Portel. It is situated on the shores of the Great Alqueva Lake, in the vicinity of the local River Pier. Its setting within the vast Alentejo landscape, beside this large body of water, gives it a unique environment deeply integrated with nature.
This river beach features an extensive sandy area, approximately 600 meters long. A portion of this sand, about 150 meters, is reserved for swimming. Complementing the sandy area, there is a grassy area equipped with awnings, providing shaded and resting zones for visitors, allowing for various ways to enjoy the space.
The swimming area in the reservoir was planned with safety and comfort in mind. It features a gentle and progressive slope, facilitating entry into the water and eliminating dangerous unevenness. There is a specific, delimited, and more sheltered area, especially designed for children's safety. The water temperature in this section of Alqueva is generally mild, making swims refreshing on hot days. Bather safety in the delimited area is ensured during the bathing season.
The beach was designed to be an inclusive space, accessible to all, including people with reduced mobility, ensuring its use is as comprehensive as possible. For the comfort of visitors, the site features various essential support infrastructures, such as restrooms, changing rooms, and outdoor showers. There is also a designated area for picnics, offering an alternative space for outdoor meals. Parking areas are available for visitors' vehicles.
The excellence of Amieira River Beach has been officially recognized. It is distinguished with the Blue Flag, an international symbol of environmental quality and safety of bathing areas. Additionally, it received the "Golden Quality Beach" award granted by Quercus, which evaluates bathing water quality based on rigorous and consistent criteria over several bathing seasons. These awards reflect the good condition of the waters and the support infrastructures on site.
In addition to leisure on the sand and swimming, the vast surface of the Great Alqueva Lake in the vicinity of the river beach offers opportunities for nautical activities. Those who wish can use equipment such as canoes, pedal boats, or paddle boards, allowing them to explore the reservoir from the water and enjoy the surrounding landscape from a different perspective.
