The Freixo Water Mill is located in the village of Pavia, municipality of Mora, set within a typical Alentejo landscape. Its position is idyllic, on the south bank of the Freixo Stream, very close to the point where it converges with the Tera Stream. The area is characterized by rugged terrain, marked by the presence of granite outcrops.
This ancient milling complex consists of three distinct yet proximate structures: the water mill itself, the miller's house, and a stable. Each of these constructions, built of stone with rustic masonry, demonstrates the simplicity and robustness of traditional architecture. Although the original roofs no longer exist, it is possible to imagine the daily dynamics that once thrived there. The mill, specifically, operated with a horizontal wheel, an ingenious technique that channeled the force of water through channels to the mill race, driving the millstones for grinding cereals.
The architecture of the Freixo Mill reveals ancestral methods of harnessing natural resources. The rectangular-plan mill building still preserves its crafted stone facades, where the openings through which water entered and exited to power the millstones can be observed. The levadas (water channels), built of stone, are a testament to the engineering capability of the era, crucial for directing the stream's flow. The surroundings are shaped by interesting geological formations, such as the so-called "giant's kettles" and "boulder chaos," resulting from the millennia-old action of water and nature on the local granite.
The environment surrounding the Freixo Water Mill is an invitation to observe nature. The dominant vegetation is characteristic of the Mediterranean climate, notably the Holm Oak and Gum Rockrose, which paint the landscape with their hues and scents. The area's biodiversity extends to avifauna, with various passerine species visible. With some luck and a keen eye, one might also be treated to the beauty of the Kingfisher or the melodious song of the Blackbird, which inhabit the stream banks.
