The Church of Santo António is located in the village of Pavia, in the municipality of Mora, positioned at its westernmost point. This place was once known as "Matinho de Santo António" (Saint Anthony's Grove) or "Rua de Santo António" (Saint Anthony's Street), names that reveal its historical importance and its connection to the local community since ancient times. Its location allows for a peaceful observation of the village surroundings, set within the Alentejo landscape.
This religious building dates back to the 17th century, originating from a donation and initially serving as a hermitage. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, it played a significant role as a pilgrimage site, attracting devotees and visitors. Its history reflects the faith and life of the people of the region, marking the landscape with its lasting presence and cultural legacy.
The church features a style that fits the popular religious construction of the era, with vernacular characteristics. Inside, the space reveals a traditional composition, with the nave, the chancel, and a small sacristy. One of the most artistically interesting points is the altarpiece that presides over the altar, where eight painted panels can be observed, narrating the life and miracles of Saint Anthony, inviting contemplation and knowledge of his iconography.
Over time, the Church of Santo António underwent periods of transformation. In the 19th century, the building underwent significant alterations. By 1930, the structure was in ruins, a victim of the elements and the passage of time. However, the community of Pavia, with the support of the parish priest, joined efforts and, by 1932, the hermitage was fully recovered, a testament to local resilience and devotion. Today, it remains a site for sporadic worship and celebrations such as baptisms, perpetuating its historical and religious legacy.
