The Palácio dos Coutinhos is located in the village of Veiros, part of the municipality of Estremoz, in Alentejo. It stands in a central and prominent location, facing Praça Marquês da Praia e Monforte, one of the main squares of the locality. Its main façade marks a corner, integrating into Veiros' urban and historical environment.

An Eighteenth-Century Legacy

Dating back to the 18th century, the Palácio dos Coutinhos was originally conceived as a noble residence, testifying to the importance and splendor of the era. Its construction began around 1700, initiated by Luís Galvão Coutinho Freire, who was the governor of Veiros. Later, in the first half of the same century, the works were completed by his son, Diogo Galvão Pegado Coutinho Freire de Andrade, a prominent figure as the Master of the Horse to King D. João V.

This building reflects the architectural style of its time, marked by sobriety and elegance, serving as home to one of the most prominent families in the region.

Architecture and Distinctive Features

The architecture of the Palácio dos Coutinhos is distinguished by its main façade, which appears sober yet imposing. Its elements in ashlar masonry are striking, with pilastered quoins that rise and are topped by slightly recessed urns, lending a touch of solemnity to the structure.

Along the upper floor, we find balcony windows, each with its ashlar masonry frames, topped by straight lintels, friezes, and cornices, lending rhythm and elegance to the ensemble. On the ground floor, an old carriage entrance stands out, reminding us of its original function as a stately home.

A Renovated Cultural Hub

Following a renovation process, the Palácio dos Coutinhos gained a new life, transforming into an active cultural center for the village of Veiros. The building was adapted to host various activities, now featuring spaces dedicated to music education and rehearsals, social areas, and a modern auditorium. This space has been revitalized to host events and initiatives that enrich the local cultural landscape.

Currently, the Palace also serves as the headquarters of the Sociedade Filarmónica Veirense, an entity with an important role in the community's musical tradition. Its classification as a Monument of Municipal Interest underscores the relevance and heritage value of this building for the region.
